About this blog.

My son was diagnosed with PDD-NOS at 24 months. I created this blog to bring meaning to the often-confusing label. Sometimes I have answers. Other times, just more questions.

SPD: Taking it to the Next Level?

As I blogged, Sensory Processing Disorder is not in DSM-IV. The lobbying effort to add it to the next version of the diagnostic manual has gone to the next level. Yes, there's an online petition. I'm somewhat ambivalent about this. On one hand, I'd like to see the diagnosis legitimized. On the other, I'm not sure its addition should be so democratic. A compelling medical or scientific reason should drive its addition, not popular demand.

Thanks for the info on this. Why is it, exactly, that the medical community does not give more attention to SPD?

That's a really good question. I think it has to do with the fact that sensory processing falls within the domain of occupational therapy. The therapists themselves are mostly not doctors. Kranowitz, the author of The Out of Sync Child, is a former preschool teacher. I think the movement needs some heft to impress the elitists.

A petition? I'm totally in favor of awareness, but the APA are not going to base their decision on a petition. They want solid research to back SPD up as a real, treatable disorder.

If people want to see it in the DSM-V, they should find SPD research near them and participate.
