My son was diagnosed with PDD-NOS at 24 months. I created this blog to bring meaning to the often-confusing label. Sometimes I have answers. Other times, just more questions.
Just curious as to your feelings about Dr. Greenspan and if you have tried to make an appointment with him for your son? I believe he is the world's foremost authority on mental health and disorders in children. Meeting with him, you sit on a floor in his home for several hours and play with your child, while he observes you, directs your play and then details what he believes are the problems with your child and then gives you a plan of attack.
Thanks. Well...I bought the read Engaging Autism, and agree with much of the key tenets of the Floortime approach. Indeed I'm focused more fostering those exchanges of warmth and humor (per the Floortime philosophy), and less on the language therapy (which is the primary treatment plan for the "late talkers" I've blogged about extensively).
But...
I can't really get behind a lot of the psychobable. Theory of mind really only goes so far. I believe that autism is a neurotype, and the psychological effects are just that - effects. So Brad is under the care of a doctor with the title "Neurodevelopmental Pediatrician." So far, Brad's latest doctor has served us well. She ordered, and Brad submitted to, an extensive metabolic and mitochondrial workup. We're still awaiting the results. My guess is that a psychologist is less prepared to probe for an underlying neurological cause.

Some doctors still aren't sure about him being on the spectrum. I guess it's the early onset of language that confuses them, but otherwise he behaves a lot like Brad. I wish you the best! Athena
